Benzaldehyde: Capturing the Right Essence

March 08, 2020

Benzaldehyde is simple chemical substance with bitter almond odor having a Benzene Ring attached to an Aldehyde group; however its simplicity is its key essence as it can react with variety of other molecules leading to formulation of complex and useful compounds.

Benzaldehyde is available in natural form and can also be manufactured synthetically.

In 1803, French Pharmacist Martres was the first person who extracted Benzaldehyde from bitter almonds. After 30 years since then, Benzaldehyde was synthetically formulated by two German Chemists Friedrich Wohler and Justus von Liebig.

Natural Benzaldehyde exists in plant especially in species Rosacea. It is mainly available in form of Glycoside in plant stem bark, leaves or seeds such as Amygdalin, Bitter Almond, Cherry, Laurel, and Peach. It can be obtained from essential oils by fractionation.

Synthetic form of Benzaldehyde is more widely used these days which is manufactured normally through Toluene Oxidation or Chlorination of Benzaldehyde.

One of the key features of Benzaldehyde is the fact that the way it is blended can play a major role in the exact quality that it gives off in a product. At its strongest, it has a pungent and bitter flavor or aroma – however, when diluted or sweetened it has a sweet almond flavor or fragrance.

Major Application Industries of Benzaldehyde wherein it is used as base raw material are as followed:

  Industry   Precursor for
Flavor and Fragrance   Cinnamon Aldehyde, Cinnamon Acid, Hexyl Cinnamon Aldehyde etc.
Pharmaceuticals   Some Antibiotics, Antihypertensive drugs, Bronchodilators etc.
  Agrochemical   Meta PhenoxyBenzaldehyde, Cypermethrin etc.
  Powder Coating   Mainly Benzoin
  Dyestuff    Mainly Malachite Green
  Plasticizer   Mainly Benzoic Acid

Market Dynamics

According to analysis, the global Benz aldehyde market was valued at USD 241.4 million in 2015 and is expected to be valued at USD 301.0 million by the end of 2022, expanding at a CAGR of 3.2%. The key factors responsible for growth of global Benz aldehyde market are, rise in demand among the aromatic chemical manufacturers along with the growth in aromatic chemicals market, increasing demand for Benz aldehyde as an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) in the pharmaceutical industries. Agrochemicals industry being one of the key consumers of Benzaldehyde in the developing markets is further expected to augment the demand for Benz aldehyde. Furthermore, consumption of Benz aldehyde in manufacturing of dyestuff, flavors and fragrances is propelling the demand for Benz aldehyde, which in turn is adding value to the global Benz aldehyde market. However, the crude oil price fluctuations leading to the volatility of raw material prices for Benz aldehyde manufacturing and federal regulations associated with manufacturing and consumption of Benz aldehyde, emergence of small players leading to competitive pricing are some of the restraining factors identified in the global Benz aldehyde market. Geographically, Asia-Pacific region dominates the Benz aldehyde market both in terms of volume and value and is expected to grow significantly at CAGRs of 3.3 % and 4.2 % respectively. China is major revenue generating country due to growing end user industry and increase in consumption rate of chemicals by manufacturers. Europe, North America accounts for second and third market share in the global Benz aldehyde market after Asia Pacific.

Interesting fact: One source of Benz aldehyde that isn’t often considered is human beings – yet we breathe it out in small quantities from the material we consume and from the breakdown of other compounds in the digestive system. And this could prove helpful when attempting to recover survivors of a disaster. A 2012 study at the Leibniz Institute for Analytical Chemistry in Hannover showed that human breath contained a range of chemicals, including Benz aldehyde, which could be picked up by future detectors to alert a search and rescue team to signs of life.
