Chlorinated Paraffin

HS Code : 38249900 | CAS NO. : 63449-39-8

General description:

Chemical Formula: C24H44Cl6

Chlorinated paraffin (CP) is a complex chemical substance used in multiple applications across diverse industries. It is often used as a flame retardant and secondary plasticizer in rubber, paints, adhesives, caulks, sealants and plastics. Another use is as a coolant or lubricant in metal cutting or forming.

Application & Usage:

  • It is mainly used as a flame retardant in conveyer belt, V belts, natural & synthetic rubber.
  • It is mainly used as a plasticizer in formulation of PVC compounds & granules used in wires & cables, PVC windows and door profiles, PVC flooring, films & sheets, PVC foot wears, etc.
  • Used in Polyurethane and Polysulfide based sealants and adhesives.
  • As an extreme pressure additive in metal working fluids / cutting compounds.
  • As a flame retardant in the paint industry in the formulation of swimming pool paints and other fire proof paints.

FAQs

How is Chlorinated Paraffin manufactured?

Chlorinated Paraffin or Chlorinated Paraffin Wax (CPW) is manufactured using the following raw materials: paraffin wax and chlorine in the presence of sodium carbonate and activated carbon. The Paraffin Wax is melted in a vessel provided with steam jacket. The molten wax is charged to a glass lined chlorinator jacketed for steam heating. Dry chlorine gas is introduced to the mass of melted wax from bottom at regulated rate. The reaction temperature is maintained at 100oC for 18 to 20 hours. Liberated hydrochloric acid is absorbed in water in a packed absorption column. The chlorinated product is mixed with certain additives, filtered, cooled and sent packing in drum

Are Chlorinated Paraffins toxic to humans?

AAs per research, chlorinated paraffin is partially toxic to human. A peer reviewed published report mentions that chlorinated paraffins are “practically nontoxic” for the humans within a limited range of intake. CPW does have the potential for bio-accumulation and can lead to sever marine pollution and aquatic toxicity. Refer to the suppliers MSDS sheet and discuss with medical professionals to in case of any assistance.

What are industrial use of chlorinated paraffins?

Chlorinated paraffin is widely used in several industries like plasticizers in plastics like PVC. It can withstand the extreme pressure additives in metalworking fluids, flame retardants and additives in the paint compounds. Ensure you are using it in the right composition to have the expected results.
