Formic acid (also called methanoic acid), the simplest of the carboxylic acids. It is made by the action of sulfuric acid upon sodium formate, which is produced from carbon monoxide and sodium hydroxide.

Application & Usage:

  • It is use as substitute of acetic acid in textile
  • Used in leather for deliming and bating leaves the hides in a slightly alkaline state, & tanning requires acidic conditions therefore, hides are pretreated with sulfuric acid and formic acid prior to tanning in a process called pickling to bring down the pH of collagen
  • It is also use as a coagulant in the production of rubber
