General Description
Chlorinated Paraffin (CP) is a complex mixture of polychlorinated n-alkanes, produced by the chlorination of paraffin wax. It is a transparent, viscous liquid or waxy solid characterized by high chemical stability and low volatility.
Available in various grades based on chlorine content (typically 40% to 70%) and carbon chain length (Medium C14-17, Long C18-30), it serves as a cost-effective secondary plasticizer and flame retardant. It is extensively used in the production of flexible PVC, rubber compounds, paints, adhesives, and metalworking fluids.
Chemical Properties
• Molecular Weight: Varies based on chain length and chlorination degree (approx. 300–600 g/mol)
• Physical State: Viscous liquid (40-62% Cl) or Waxy Solid/Powder (70%+ Cl)
• Solubility: Insoluble in water; Soluble in benzene, chloroform, ether, and most organic solvents
• Stability: Chemically inert, hydrolytically stable, and non-flammable
• Odor: Mild, characteristic sweet odor
Technical Specification
• Appearance: Clear to pale yellow viscous liquid / White solid powder
• Chlorine Content: 40% – 72% (Common grades: 40%, 45%, 52%, 62%)
• Specific Gravity (at 27°C): 1.16 – 1.65 (increases with chlorine content)
• Viscosity (at 27°C): 2 – 100+ Poise (Grade dependent)
• Color (Hazen/APHA): 30 – 120 Max
• Thermal Stability: Good (Low HCl evolution at high temps)
• Volatile Loss: Low (< 2.5% at 180°C/4hrs)
Applications
PVC Processing Used : as a secondary plasticizer and flame retardant to improve flexibility, fire resistance, and processing performance in PVC compounds.
Rubber and Elastomers : Used to enhance flexibility, oil resistance, and flame retardancy in rubber formulations.
Metalworking Fluids : Used as an extreme pressure additive in cutting oils and lubricants to improve wear resistance and tool life.
Paints and Coatings : Used to improve flame retardancy, chemical resistance, and film durability in industrial coating systems.
